What are the first steps in moving to assisted living?

We get a lot of questions about life and living at The Glen. We started this special series to address the most frequently asked ones, with answers from one of our expert staff members.

Q: “What are the first steps in moving from my house to assisted living?

A: Moving to an assisted living community is a big step for not just the one moving but for the family too. At The Glen, we work with older adults to help make the move run smoothly. To ease the stress and look ahead, here are the steps to transition to assisted living for older adults moving from a home:

First, tour The Glen at The Stiles Apartments and other communities that interest you.

The tour is the first and lasting impression. It is important for you to see the community and get a feel for the environment. You will find that what stands out during the tour at The Glen is the dedication of the staff and the welcoming nature of the residents. Plan ahead, writing a list of questions and see if you can talk to the residents who live in the community. It’s important for you to feel a connection to the community you choose.

Choose a floor plan that fits your needs.

Depending on availability, you may be able to move in as soon as possible. In other cases, there may be a waiting list. Touring early will give you the best opportunity to find the right apartment for you. (Call 318-798-3500 to learn what options are available.)

We assess your health needs and concerns.

A staff member from our health care team (typically our Director of Nursing) will assess your health and assistance needs. The assessment involves a memory test, and we ask you about medications, your lifestyle, and your interests. The goal is to set you up for success at The Glen. Assisted living is for older adults who need some help with the activities of daily living (such as housework, laundry, taking medications, etc.). It’s imperative that you are in the right environment for your needs.

We start direct lines of communication with your trusted physician.

Your primary care physician knows your health history and you trust your doctor. Building a bridge of communication, we function as added support in your health care team of professionals. This also makes the move-in transition easier.

Select a move-in date.

Once space opens up for you and your assessment is complete, we work together to set a date for your move. We provide a list of resources for you, should you need them. It’s important for us to be of assistance to you and your family throughout this new transition.

Next, you move in and enjoy a life filled with freedom! At The Glen, you can live as independent as you would like to be.

At The Glen we do everything we can to make your move as easy as possible. We are here to answer your questions at every step.
