The Glen’s Rich History: A Legacy of Compassion and Service in Shreveport
History of The Glen: From Vision to Community Haven
The Glen has a deep and inspiring history rooted in the Shreveport community. In 1890, Miss Mary Files envisioned a permanent home for homeless elderly women, demonstrating her commitment to compassion and service. Although she passed away before her dream could be realized, her legacy lives on through a generous donation that paved the way for the future of The Glen.
In 1898, Miss Files’ two sisters, Miss Dick Files and Mrs. Rhoda Files Hunter, brought her dream to life by founding the “Home for the Homeless.” They established a Board of Directors that continues to guide The Glen with the same values and commitment to community service that have shaped it from the very beginning.
As the years progressed, The Glen preserved the mission and vision set forth by its founders while expanding its support services and outreach programs. Over time, these thoughtful efforts strengthened our purpose and deepened our relationship with the northwestern Louisiana community.
Today, we remain dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for seniors that fosters independence and dignity.
