Residents minister in chapel

Two retired ministers who live at The Glen continue to share their passion for the gospel with weekly services in the campus chapel.

Rev. Crawford Williams and Rev. Price Harris, both residents of The Stiles Apartments, spent decades in their respective ministries before moving to The Glen.

Williams served as pastor in Baptist churches around the south, while Harris focused his ministry on singing gospel music for congregations in the U.S. and internationally, and working with choirs.

Now they are using their calling to minister to residents of The Glen with weekly services in the chapel that have grown from 12 attendees at the first meeting in 2021 to an average of 40 attendees in 2024.

Each Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Harris will lead a time of singing before Williams gives a sermon. Afterward, Williams will take prayer requests.

“It has been a joy,” Harris said. “Brother Crawford and I uniquely served the same church in Mississippi, at different times. We knew each other casually, but it’s really been a joy to work with him.”

Williams graduated from seminary in New Orleans in 1955 and then moved to Columbia, Mississippi, to begin his ministry at a Baptist church there. He went on to pastor at churches in South Carolina, Tennessee, Tallulah, Louisiana, and finally to Ingleside Baptist Church in Shreveport.

“I retired from the pastorate, but then I started going to Keachi Baptist,” he said.

He continues to visit the Baptist church in Keachi the fourth Sunday of each month. Williams and his wife, Gaynelle, moved to The Glen in 2019, and she passed away in 2021.

As for Harris, he graduated from William Carey University with a bachelor’s degree in music and a concentration in voice. In 1969, he moved to Shreveport and joined Calvary Baptist Church.

“I’ve always just considered myself a gospel singer, but also I did choir work and youth work, worked with teenage choirs, and went all over the place singing,” he said. “Then I started doing mission work, and I’ve been to several places.”

During his time in music ministry, he has also traveled to Jamaica over 40 times and visited other places such as El Salvador, Romania, Canada, Germany, and more. After moving to The Glen in 2023 with his wife, Ann, Harris joined Williams for the Saturday services.

“The people have really been sweet and responsive,” he said, emphasizing that the services are open to residents of all denominations. “We just want to worship together and hear the message.”
