Social areas a highlight of Stiles Apartments
The Stiles Apartments are a cornerstone of The Glen, where independent and assisted living residents live and thrive.
The seeds for what would become the present-day Stiles Apartments were sown in 1986, when The Glen opened our then-new location on East Flournoy Lucas Road. This new expansion, then called The Glen Retirement Village, initially offered a 126-bed nursing center and 25 independent living apartments.
At that time, Glen Board members began planning for the implementation of the second and third phases of the campus’s expansion. In 1987, a matching grant of $500,000 was secured from the Community Foundation’s Annie Lowe Stiles donation, with other funds raised from local charitable individuals and groups.
Stiles, who passed away in 1980, was a major donor to The Glen. Phase II of the campus expansion became known as The Stiles Apartments in her honor. The work was completed by October of 1990.
This $2 million project added 50 apartments featuring fully-equipped kitchens, dining and living rooms, and outside patios. Twenty-eight one and two-bedroom apartments were added for Phase III in 1992. These apartments were designed to encourage independent living, with community dining and other assistance available as needed.
In 2010, the licensing process for assisted living began. Stiles was licensed for Level 4 Adult Residential Care in February 2012, becoming the first Level 4 facility in Louisiana.
As of 2024, The Stiles Apartments feature 101 total apartments with floor plans varying from studios, one-bedrooms, or two-bedrooms.
A consistent theme of The Stiles Apartments are multiple social and sitting areas sprinkled throughout the community, where residents can visit with family and neighbors. A major highlight is Grandmother’s Garden, a serene outdoor space where residents can stroll around the walking path or sit on the porch enjoying the view. The Harrell Library — named for Glen supporter, the late Billy Earl Harrell — continues to provide a wide variety of books for residents to check out, as well as a quiet place to hold programs and meetings.
Other gathering areas include the Madison Room, named for former Board president Ruth Madison Marshall, and the Bridge Room, which sits above
The Glen’s water feature and offers tables for games and community puzzles that residents may enjoy together.
An enjoyable environment is key to the Stiles’ shared spaces, where neighbors come together for socialization and enrichment.
In the next year, The Glen will aim to implement a project to modernize some of these shared spaces of The Stiles Apartments, enhancing residents’ quality of life and creating an even more welcoming environment.
A modernized space will foster a stronger sense of community and belonging, with the goal to improve overall satisfaction and well-being for both residents and employees.
